Abuja - A former Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Josephine Anenih, has
urged women to contest the 2015 elections rather than blame their male
counterparts for inadequate representation in government.
She
said women were too lazy to take up the challenge of contesting
elections, adding that the era when women waited to be spoon fed had
gone.
"The question is not what can be done for women, but what
can women do for themselves to make sure their participation in 2015
increases.
"We do not just have quality as women, but quantity.
If women will come out, they will be elected. The problem we have is
that women remain in their comfort zones.
"You find qualified
women, better qualified than the men, but they don’t come out and you
cannot go and vote for somebody who has not asked you to vote for them.
"I want to see more women coming out to vie for positions," she said.
Anenih
said that the few women who contested in previous elections only did so
because they were given free tickets by their parties.
She said
despite being given free tickets, the women were not ready to either
fund campaigns or come up with structures to work on.
"The few
women who have come out do so because the political parties gave them
free forms. They did not want to risk their money.
"Besides that,
they did not have any structure. They did not reach out to anybody and
when they do not win, they say the men do not allow them.
"We have seen women who have won because they worked hard," she said.
