Scorned family refuses to collect centenary award

The family of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Afrobeat legend, claim they will refuse rewards from the Federal Government unless they apologise for killing some of his family members.

According to his son, Femi Kuti, the family might refuse even if the government apologises, according to a report from  PM News.

The family claim the government killed  Femi's grandmother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and burned down Kalakuta Republic - Fela’s home for many years.

Fela is amongst the 100 awardees of the Centenary Awards that is part of the 100 years celebration of Nigeria since amalgamation in 1914.

He will be honoured in the ‘Internationally Acclaimed Artistes, Literary Icons and Journalists’ category.
