Today, March 11th
is the first day of an official visit of UN Human Rights Commissioner,
Navi Pillay. The High Commissioner was invited for a three-day visit by
the Nigerian Government.
The
visit is aimed at promotion and protection of the human rights and
reaffirming the support of UN Human Rights Office’s efforts on improving
the human rights of Nigerians. The visit is also aimed at increasing
awareness and understanding of human rights all over Nigeria.
The
official visit will involve meetings with the President Goodluck
Jonathan, meeting with Ministers of Foreign and Interior Affairs,
Ministers of Justice, Women Affair, Social Development as well as other
officials of Nigerian Government, National Assembly and judiciary.
Pillay is also to hold a meeting with the National Human Rights
Commission, several civil society organizations as well as international
community and UN agencies.
