Arsenal produced a remarkable late comeback to hold Everton to a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park, although Arsene Wenger’s side showed similar signs of the weaknesses that ultimately cost them the Premier League title last season.
First half goals from Seamus Coleman and Steven Naismith had Goodison Park rocking before Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud struck late to spare the north London club’s blushes.
After a slow start on Merseyside, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain almost gave the away side the lead following a mistake from Coleman, but the attacker side-footed his effort wide of the post.
Coleman soon atoned for his error when he stooped low at the far post to head Gareth Barry’s deep cross past Wojciech Szczesny for Everton’s opener. It should have been two in quick succession but Kevin Mirallas sent a low effort wide following Naismith’s flick on.
However, Naismith made no mistake on the stroke of half time and doubled Everton’s lead with a cool finish after a bursting run and through-ball from Romelu Lukaku.
Olivier Giroud replaced Alexis Sanchez at the break and the Frenchman should have put his side back in the game with his first touch; however, he volleyed Aaron Ramsey’s pinpoint pass over the crossbar.
Giroud gave Arsenal presence up front and went close again from 18 yards before seeing another snapshot superbly saved by Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard.
Joel Campbell was handed his Premier League debut as he replaced Oxlade-Chamberlain late on, before Ramsey was left with the easiest of finishes from Mesut Ozil’s cross to set up a grandstand finish.
And Giroud did not disappoint, rising highest to head in Nacho Monreal’s stoppage time cross and earn a share of the spoils for his side..
