3SC, Stores rekindle old rivalry

Shooting Stars FC and returning Stationery Stores FC of Lagos will on Wednesday rekindle their age-long rivalry when the two former elite clubs clash in one of the many mid-week matches in the on-going Nigeria National League.
Also, high-flying Niger Tornadoes will ambush visiting Adamawa United in Minna in what looks like a consolidation match after back to back victories to lead the pack in Division A even as Jigawa who will have to pay series of fines because of crowd trouble is set to battle formidable Plateau United at home. Jigawa will have to win this one to lift up their spirit.
But all eyes will be at the Adamasingba Stadium, Ibadan where old enemies Shooting Stars are set to trade tackles with Stores popularly called Flaming Flamingoes or Super Stores by its followers especially Lagosians who will come in large numbers to support their team against a determined home side.
There are many other mouth-watery matches across the country with another thriller expected in Jos where Mighty Jets will be host to Ranch Bees of Kaduna, while Coach Henry Nwosu-tutored Gateway FC travels to Omoku to meet Go-Round FC.

Maradona to add voice to SWC

Diego Maradona (Getty Images)Argentinian football legend Diego Maradona will work as a commentator at the World Cup for South American television channel teleSUR, an Argentine website reports.
"I have just signed the most exciting contract of my career," Maradona told canchallena.com's website on Monday.
"This is football with politics, that is what I like most," he added. Maradona will work together with Victor Hugo Morales, one of the most well-known sport journalists in South America.
The 53-year-old Maradona previously did television work at the World Cups of 1994 - when still active as a player - and 2006.
The World Cup begins in Brazil on June 12.

Rooney yearns for Champions League glory

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has admitted that he will not be satisfied if he finishes his career without lifting the Champions League trophy again.
Rooney, who signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract earlier this week, tasted glory in the competition with United in 2008, before finishing on the losing side in the final against Barcelona in 2009 and 2011.
United have not looked like potential European champions this season, falling 15 points off the pace in the Premier League and crashing out of both domestic cup competitions, but Rooney says that their objectives remain the same.
"You always want to win it," he said on Monday, on the eve of the first leg of United's last 16 tie away to Greek champions Olympiakos in Piraeus.
"To win one is never enough, especially at this club. You need to keep trying to get into finals.
"The feeling you get when you actually win the trophy is incredible, so there's no way you want to stop at one. You want to win every year.
"Obviously that's impossible, but if we can go to the final, it'd be great for us. It's an opportunity to win another trophy, so hopefully we can do that."
Barcelona and defending champions Bayern Munich have already produced shows of strength in the tournament with 2-0 first-leg wins over Manchester City and Arsenal in their respective last 16 ties.
However, rather than being daunted by the sight of United's domestic rivals coming unstuck, Rooney says it has only whetted his appetite for the competition.
"They've been brilliant (games) to watch," he told a press conference.
"You see Barcelona against Manchester City. Barcelona were incredible and keep the ball really well.
"Then you watch Bayern Munich and it's almost the perfect performance at Arsenal. I know both teams (City and Arsenal) were down to 10 men, but the way they keep the ball and open teams up is great to watch.
"We have to try to do that, try and keep the ball, be patient and break teams down. A lot of the teams we're playing are sitting back with all the team, so it's down to us to move the ball quickly and break them down."
United centre-backs Phil Jones and Jonny Evans have not travelled to Greece due to injury and record signing Juan Mata is cup-tied, but manager David Moyes has an otherwise strong squad to select from.
United will start as favourites against a team who last reached the quarter-finals in 1999, but with Olympiakos having pipped Benfica to a place in the knockout phase, Moyes says that they must be respected.
"Olympiakos have done very well against Paris Saint-Germain in the games I've watched, and Benfica," he said.
"They came through in a difficult group, they've got a great home record here, so we know it's a difficult night. They've a big support. It's a tough game."
With United 11 points adrift of Liverpool in the race for a top-four place in the league, they may need to win the Champions League to qualify for next season's competition, but Rooney believes that the Olympiakos tie can act as a springboard to a successful run-in.
"As a group of players we have to take responsibility for our league position," said the 28-year-old England striker.
"We know we're better than that and we haven't performed as well as we know we can do. We know that and as a team it hurts when you know you can do better.
"It's important that we finish the season strongly and take that momentum into next year, but more importantly we try and get into that fourth spot and try and do well in the Champions League. It's important to us all."

President Jonathan insists Sanusi is still CBN Governor.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi
Sanusi Lamido Sanusi

President Goodluck Jonathan has insisted that Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, remains the Governor of the Central Bank.
The president was responding to questions during the presidential media chat on Monday and explained that the Kano prince was suspended, to allow investigations into allegation of financial misappropriation against him to be carried out.
He also said that Sanusi will return to his position, if he is found to be innocent of all charges at the end of the investigation.
Sanusi had earlier revealed that he would challenge his removal legally, but would not return if he is asked to, saying “even if I challenge it, I will not go back to the job. Even if I challenge it successfully, I will not go back to it. I think it will be in the interest of the institution for the courts to establish once and for all if the president has the powers to do this.
“If it is not challenged, the next Central Bank Governor cannot be independent with fear of being suspended by a politician. I do plan to have the courts confirm if indeed that authority exists and I will challenge it.”

Guard rapes woman returning from T.B Joshua’s Church in Lagos

Ebute-Meta-Chief-Magistrate-Court-360x225
Over the weekend, a 24-year-old lady, Tivere, was raped by a security guard – Kelly Ochuko- on Mutiatu Street, Ikotun, Lagos State, while returning from a vigil at the Synagogue Church of All Nation.
The incident happened around 2am.
Police source say Tivere had travelled to Lagos from Sapele, Delta State, to participate in Pastor Temitope Joshua’s midnight programme. Around 2am, she had left for her lodge when a 27-year-old Ochukwo allegedly accosted her.
Punch newspaper reports that the security man, who was employed by the Igando Landlord’s Association to guard the area got his victim after threatening to harm her with a cutlass. To avoid being murdered with the cutlas, she yielded and followed him into an uncompleted building where the act took place.
After having carnal knowledge of the 24-year-old, Ochuko was said to have pleaded with her to marry him, and exchanged phone numbers with her that night.
After being freed, the victim approached some policemen she saw at a junction and narrated her ordeal to them and the culprit was arrested.
He was arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State on two counts of rape.
Although, Ochuko pleaded not guilty to the charge and elected summary trial, the magistrate, Ms Y.B Badejo-Okusanya, admitted him to bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The matter was further adjourned till March 4, 2014.

Liz Benson reveals why she is now choosy about appearing in movies

Born-again Actress, Liz Benson-Ameye has revealed that she will only appear in movies that have to do with humanity and preach good tidings.
Liz-Benson
Liz who resumed acting a few weeks ago after quitting for almost a decade, stated this in a recent interview with Journalists.
While reacting to a question about the fond memories of her acting life, Liz Benson-Ameye, married to Bishop Great Ameye of Freedom Family Assembly, said “I always have the movies that I fancy based on experience. But it is the viewers that can judge that because they all have their favourites. But for me, every production brings its own challenges that come with it. I deal with them in their own way. I can’t place a hand. But if I want to take into account, Living Funeral is it because I’m doing something as a Minister of the gospel that projects my faith and tells a good moral story. I was moved and shaken by the movie. Some of the lines of the scripts are killing. I can’t even place what it is about the movie, but the story line is touching and the movie has fetched us eight nominations in Africa Magic Video Choice Awards, AMVCA, including Liz Benson-Ameye being nominated for Best Supporting Actress in the Drama.
“I just thank God for giving me the grace to act in such movies. Life itself has its challenges. Even if there are some hurdles there, you will always survive them. I have so much work to do in God’s vineyard. To God be the glory, I can only appear in movies that have to do with humanity and preach good tidings now. For me, the moral standard is what I deal in right now.
“The best, depth and height of every human being and endeavour are all in the Bible. Even the most spoken words in history are taken from the Word of God.
For me, it is God because movie roles, boyfriend, girlfriend, romance and all that, are no longer for me. The most recent one that we are projecting is in the Bible.” She concluded

The beneficiary, Somaya Olayinka Dahli had a successful heart operation in late 2013. Doctors informed her parents that Somaya would need post-surgery treatment, monitoring and care to keep her alive. Praiz learnt of the situation and decided to help out.
Now it has been announced that Praiz successfully raised the sum of N10 Million via the callertune project.
According to X3M Music act Praiz, ‘It was sad seeing Somaya go through all that pain. She’s a little girl who shouldn’t suffer like that.
Somaya’s parents have been presented with the money which will cover their daughter’s medical bills.

LASU to re-open February 24.

Senate of the Lagos State University, LASU, has resolved to reopen the school Monday, February 24.
The Senate, after several hours of deliberations directed that the university be re-opened to allow final year students across all departments to sit for their second semester examinations.
Few weeks ago, crisis engulfed the university as management and students of the institution disagreed over non-completion of registration process ahead of the examination.
Apparently angered by the closure of the university’s registration portal, the students went on rampage, destroying school property and disrupting the second semester examinations.
The VC wasn’t not spared as well, as his car was destroyed by the rioting students who insisted that the portal must be re-opened before examinations can commence in the school.
The development forced management of the institution to shutdown the state-owned

US: Clinton takes responsibility for Benghazi attack.

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says it is her responsibility to keep diplomats safe. The statement came in reaction to last month's deadly attack on the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, which has become an issue in the US Presidential campaign.
Clinton's comments followed stepped-up criticism of the Obama administration over the Benghazi attack, which Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney has sought to use to dent Obama’s foreign policy credibility before the November 6 election.
The administration initially attributed the violence to protests over an anti-Islam film and said it was not premeditated. Obama and other officials have since said the incident was a terrorist attack.
Romney has accused the administration of not providing adequate security to American diplomats and misrepresenting the nature of the attack, which resulted in the death of US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.
Romney's criticisms have sought to undercut the foreign policy record of Obama, who has been praised for the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and the withdrawal of troops from unpopular wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Congress has increased pressure on the State Department to release information about the attack. Obama and Clinton have both vowed a full investigation.

South Korea spending over a billion Dollars for 5G network.

southkorea

Is the era of 5G connectivity upon us? The government in South Korea says so, and it's sinking $1.5 billion into upgrades it says will make mobile communications there 1,000 times faster than they are today.
But not so fast. Literally, not so fast. As was the case when smartphones and other mobile devices first started having 4G slapped on them, the term 5G is as much a marketing slogan as anything else -- at this point, anyway.
And if technophiles in the United States are hoping Korea's announcement means warp-speed data connections are coming their way in the near future, they're going to be disappointed.
Regardless of the network's capabilities, any wireless carrier wanting to take advantage of them also would need costly upgrades to their systems. Users would have to purchase new devices that could access it. And even then, there's no guarantee that Netflix or similar companies would make their own data available at speeds that live up to the Korean government's tantalizing vision of an entire movie downloading in a single second.
A worldwide high of 82.7% of South Koreans use the Internet, and 78.5% of the nation's population is on smartphones. Narrow that down to 18-24 year olds and it's dangerously close to full saturation -- 97.7%.
The science ministry's plan is realistically measured. A trial 5G network is due to be rolled out in 2017, with full rollout in 2020.
The country's telecom companies, as well as native mobile companies Samsung and LG, are on board and plan to be ready to take advantage of the network, according to the government statement.
Eventually, of course, 5G will hit the U.S. and elsewhere. Remember, the difference between 3G and 4G and 5G is somewhat semantic. Significantly upgrade what we have now and you can add a number before the G.
But we'll no doubt be behind. Korea's compact geography and existing wireless infrastructure mean that upgrades can happen faster and cheaper, and will reach more of the population than in geographically spread-out countries like the United States.
The increasing number of smartphones and tablets used in the United States is already beginning to tax existing communications networks. Add an emerging wearable tech trend and connected appliances like smart thermostats, refrigerators and smoke detectors, and experts expect the U.S. will need a serious upgrade by 2020 as well.

United States delegation to Russian Olympics includes gay athletes.

usrussiaimg

The United States' delegation to the upcoming Winter Olympics in Russia won't include a member of President Barack Obama's family or a cabinet secretary, but it will include openly gay athletes -- a clear jab at Russia's recent anti-gay laws.
Tennis legend Billie Jean King will join former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and figure skater Brian Boitano at the games' opening ceremonies on February 7, the White House said Tuesday. White House aide Rob Nabors and the U.S. ambassador to Russia will round out the delegation to Sochi.
King was one of the first professional athletes to come out as gay in the 1980s.
Two weeks later, a group led by Deputy Secretary of State William Burns will attend the closing ceremony. Speed skaters Bonnie Blair and Eric Heiden, as well as openly gay hockey player Caitlin Cahow, will also attend. It's the first time in more than a decade the President, Vice President, First Lady or former president hasn't attended an Olympic opening or closing ceremony. First Lady Michelle Obama led the delegation to 2012's Summer Olympics in London, and President George W. Bush made the trek to China for Beijing's games in 2008.
Vice President Joe Biden and his wife led a U.S. group to the last Winter Games, held in Vancouver.
The absence of high-ranking U.S. officials amounts to a snub to Russia, whose relationship with the United States has fractured over the past year. Admitted NSA leaker Edward Snowden, wanted on espionage charges in the U.S., was granted temporary asylum in Moscow, and Russian President Vladimir Putin has used Russia's veto on the United Nations Security Council to block action in Syria.

Ukraine protests turn deadly

ukainianprotests

At least four people have been shot dead and hundreds injured as demonstrators clash with police over new laws limiting the right to protest in Ukraine, the head of the protest movement's volunteer medical service, Oleg Musiy, told CNN on Wednesday.
Ukraine's Interior Ministry earlier said it was investigating a death, the circumstances of which are not clear. Local media reports suggest the man may have fallen from a statue or monument. In a statement Wednesday, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf condemned the growing violence, particularly against journalists and peaceful protesters.
"Increased tensions in Ukraine are a direct consequence of the Ukrainian government's failure to engage in real dialogue and the passage of anti-democratic legislation on January 16," Harf said. "We urge the Government of Ukraine to take steps that represent a better way forward for Ukraine, including repeal of the anti-democratic legislation and beginning a national dialogue with the political opposition."The leaders of three opposition factions met with President Viktor Yanukovych and a government working group Wednesday to try to resolve the crisis, the President's official website said.
They are Vitali Klitschko, leader of the UDAR party; Arseniy Yatsenyuk, of the Fatherland party; and Oleh Tiahnybok, of the Freedom party, or Svoboda.A statement on Yanukovych's website said the first stage of negotiations -- a meeting of more than three hours -- had ended.
Klitschko accused Yanukovych's government of having the blood of protesters on its hands.
"We did not receive any answers," Klitschko told demonstrators after the meeting, referring to calls for snap elections and the resignation of the government. "When we talked about canceling the new laws that make each of us here a criminal, we heard that maybe this can be a point of negotiations. I will be with the people. If I have to fight, I will fight. If I have to go under bullets, I will. I will stand up for the people, because I want to live in a different country."He added, amid the chants of supporters: "If tomorrow the President does not make a step forward, we will attack."Demonstrators have been rallying in the snowy streets since the weekend in protest against the laws that went into effect Wednesday.
Televised images Wednesday showed ongoing clashes between police and protesters who've massed around barricades on Hrushevskoho Street, near the burned-out shells of police buses.
The Interior Ministry said Wednesday that more than 70 people have been detained since midday Sunday

NFF confirms Emuneke Eaglets coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the appointment of Emmanuel Amuneke as the new head coach of the Nigerian male Under-17 national team, the Golden Eaglets, KickOff Nigeria reports.
This disclosure was made by the head of the NFF's technical committee, Emmanuel Ikpeme who stated that Amuneke's appointment was borne out of the need for continuity, since he was an assistant to Manu Garba who led the Golden Eaglets to win the World championship last year.
Amuneke was a strong pillar behind Garba in the United Arab Emirates as the Eaglets went past all odds to conquer the world.

Mikel doubtful for Drogba re-union

Nigeria international midfielder, John Mikel Obi, voiced his delight about the prospect of Chelsea facing Galatasaray in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, SuperSport reports.

Mikel said he was thrilled at the prospect of reuniting with his old teammate, Didier Drogba; now on the books of the Turkish side.
Mikel may not feature in the encounter as manager Jose Mourinho may leave him on the bench due to injury.

ENGLAND/ MANCHESTER UNITED, Great offer for Kroos

According to Daily Mirror, having added the loose change thrown at Wayne Rooney at Selhurst Park over the weekend to their club coffers, Manchester United have accumulated enough wealth to offer Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos a contract worth £250,000 per week, should he decide to leave the European Champions this summer.

ENGLAND/ ARSENAL, Set to announce new Rosicky contract

Arsenal have agreed terms on a contract extension for Tomas Rosicky, according to manager Arsene Wenger.

Goal exclusively revealed in November that the midfielder would be offered a new deal if he featured in 25 games for the club.

Rosicky made his 26th appearance in all competitions for the Gunners in the 4-1 victory over Sunderland on Saturday, with Wenger "absolutely adamant" he must keep the 33-year-old.

"Tomas Rosicky will stay," Wenger told reporters. "We have an agreement with him and it will come out soon.

"I am absolutely adamant he has to stay at the club."

Rosicky returned to the starting lineup on Saturday and scored as Mesut Ozil was rested, leaving Wenger to sing the experienced midfielder's praises.

He added: "I think when he arrived here he was less a tactical player.

"He was purely creative, offensive player. Today he is a real organiser on the pitch as well. I like to have him in the team because he gives a real structure to our team."

50 Cent signs with indie label.

50 Cent will release his next album on an indie label.

The Candy Shop hitmaker has severed ties with Eminem's Interscope imprint, Shady Records, after 12 years and will now be working with Caroline, a music distributor owned by Universal, starting with his album Animal Ambition, which is due out on 3 June.

In a statement, the star said: "I recorded so many album quality songs that I'm going to put the Animal project out as my viral marketing plan and then [Street King] will come out after. [Animal Ambition] is about prosperity ... ambition and prosperity."

The 38-year-old rapper has sold millions of albums for Interscope, including 15-million copies of his debut record, but the star's relationship with the label has been difficult since 2009's Before I Self Destruct, which failed to conquer the charts.
Its follow-up was delayed and the rapper complained on Twitter and threatened to leak an unreleased Dr Dre song.

But despite the problems, 50 Cent insists he still owes Interscope one album and Eminem has wished his former protégé well, saying: "Shady simply would not be what it is without 50 Cent.
"I've developed a great friendship with 50 over the years, and that's not going to change."
His move to an indie label is similar to the arrangement used by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis for The Heist, and Pet Shop Boys' scheme for last year's Electric LP.
The rapper added: "I have had great success to date with Shady/Aftermath/Interscope, and I'd like to thank Eminem and Dr Dre for giving me an incredible opportunity.

"I've learned so much from them through the years. I am excited to enter this new era where I can carry out my creative vision."
50 Cent's last UK hit was the 2012 single My Life, which peaked at number two at on the UK Single's Chart.

Miley Cyrus kissed Katy Perry and she liked it

Miley Cyrus kissed Katy Perry at her concert on Saturday night.
The Adore You hitmaker took a moment to lock lips with the brunette beauty while performing at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, as part of her Bangerz World Tour, after spotting the 29-year-old star singing along in the front row.
But the I Kissed a Girl singer Katy, who is dating John Mayer, pulled away when Miley, 21, tried to stick her tongue in her mouth, according to gossip website TMZ.com.
The Dark Horse singer shared an aftermath photograph, which features the 'Wrecking Ball' singer with her mouth hanging open in shock and Katy covering her mouth with her hand, on Twitter with the caption: ''And after! I adore you @Miley Cyrus.''
Miley hit back at critics earlier this week, who called for her raunchy tour to be cancelled and insisted she warned fans it would be X-rated.

The tweet was accompanied by a picture of Miley on stage in a revealing outfit exposing her butt.

Borno will not be led by military rule – Government

The Federal Government has denied reports that military rule will administered in Borno State over the democratic structure because of the rise in terrorist activities, Vanguard reports.

Dr. Reuben Abati, Special Advisor to the President on Media and Publicity, has called the rumors preposterous and said that the government would not remove democratically elected governors.

Abati states that the constitution of the republic does not recommend the rule of the military over that of the civilian as it does not adhere to the democratic setting of the country.
