FIFTEEN-year-old Olubunmi Agusto has emerged second in the Certiport Microsoft Word World Championship at Anaheim, California, United States of America (USA).
The Certiport Worldwide Championship is designed to test the proficiency of students in the use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel and open to students in both secondary schools and tertiary institutions.
Sponsored by the United Bank for Africa, Plc (UBA), the competition in Nigeria was conducted by Readmanna. Two students, Olubunmi Agusto of Day Waterman College, Abeokuta, Ogun State and Adonijah Airede of Regent School, Abuja, FCT, represented Nigeria at this year’s competition.
At the end of the six-month challenge, Olubunmi clinched the second position in the championship for Microsoft Word, winning the sum of $2,500 in scholarships. Dominique Howard of the United States came first, while Hannah Wilson of the United Kingdom came third.
Olubunmi has become the first African to emerge among the top three since the first edition of the competition, 13 years ago. South Africa, Cameroon, Uganda and Ghana were other African countries, apart from Nigeria, that had participated in the competition in the past.
400, 000 students round the world originally took part in the contest in their respective countries. 123 finalists, including Olubunmi Agusto and Adonijah Airede made it to the global stage.
The Certiport Microsoft Word World Championship is an annual event. Registration for the 2014 competition has already started. The competition, itself, is billed to commence in November 2014. Only students between the ages of 13 and 22 are eligible..
