Nine Power Plants Shut, Shiroro, Jebba Lose 245MW

Nine of the nation’s 26 power plants did not generate any megawatts of electricity on Wednesday, coupled with significant reduction in the generation from two of the
hydropower plants and several others.

The Shiroro Power Station in Niger State and Jebba Power Station in Kwara State saw their output fall to 300MW and 381MW, respectively, down from 450MW and 476MW on Friday, according to industry data obtained by our correspondent.

Unit 411G3 of Shiroro was out for water management, while 411G4 was out on maintenance.
Jebba’s unit 2G4 was also out for water management and 2G6 due to burnt generator winding and automatic voltage
regulator.

Generation from Egbin, which is located in Lagos, with an installed capacity of 1,320MW, was said to have been limited
to 160MW as of 6am on Wednesday, largely due to gas supply shortages, compared to the 172MW recorded on Tuesday, November 29.
The nation recorded another total system collapse on Sunday, December 4, the second in less than two weeks. The national grid had collapsed on November 24, the data showed.

The total national power generation fell to 3,251MW as of 6am on Wednesday, down from 3,574.2MW on Monday, November 28.
The power plants that were idle included Olorunsogo II in Ogun State and Ibom Power in Cross River.
Other plants, which did not generate any megawatt of electricity, were Afam IV & V, Odukpani NIPP, Trans-Amadi, AES, ASCO and Gbarain. Olorunsogo’s units GT1, 2, 3, 4 and ST2 were said to be out due to gas constraints, while ST1 was out on maintenance.
The GT1 unit of Ibom Power was out on guide vane problem, while GT2 and 3 were out due to maintenance of the gas station for 45 days since October 21.
Twelve units of Afam IV & V were said to have been de-commissioned and scrapped; units GT13, 14, 15 and 16 were out on blade failure; GT17 and 18 were out due to burnt
generator transformer; while GT19 and 20 were awaiting major overhaul.
Odukpani’s GT1 was shut down due to low excitation; GT2 out on maintenance; GT3 tripped on fire alarm; GT4 out due to unit transformer problem; and GT5 out due to gas constraints.
Trans-Amadi’s GT1, 2 and 4 were out due to gas constraints and GT3 out on fault, according to the data.
The AES was said to be out of production; ASCO’s GT1 was shut down due to leakage in the furnace; and Gbarain’s GT2 was out due to gas constraints.

A Generation Of Confused Youths

When will the goat be strong enough to kill a leopard? Would remain not just a proverb but a rhetorical question because a generation of
confused youths have allowed themselves to be mere pawns on the political chess board in our
society.
What I find disheartening is the seeming inexorable rise in demonstrations and protests
among the youths, in solidarity to those politicians supposedly painted with the tar of corruption.

It is becoming very difficult to fathom the bone of contention of some species of humanity in youth
forms, whose stock-in-trade is to barricade the streets and institutions to wail in support of our
permissive and profligate politicians, regardless of what the person is being accused of. Could such
acts of unflattering servility be passed as fool hardiness or unquantifiable stupidity?

The one that defies not just logic but also philosophy was the inexcusable manner a generation afflicted by the worst side of corruption, last week Tuesday, barricaded the National Assembly complex and queued
desperately like pipeline vandals in support of the embattled senate president, Bukola Saraki, who is
facing trial over 13 count charges, including false and improper declaration of assets to CCB when
he was governor of Kwara State— 2003-2011.

After watching the show of shame, I weeped for those faceless and incapacitated youths of my
generation who could best be described as “slaves in love with their chains”. They have
without any modicum of shame allowed themselves to be used as an object of public ridicule by desperate politicians who are on their way to public odium.

To those incongruous and venile youths, who have not only sold their conscience but have
constituted themselves as crass supporters of impunity— nothing is wrong in such social opprobrium, as long as something will come out
of it, no matter how meagre it is.
Stupidity is when we blame our past leaders for dumping us in this hell hole we found ourselves
but when such persons are called to come answer corruption charges against them, we make an
abrute and complete reversal of attitude, opinion or position in support of the accused persons.
It is an unmitigated irony that our political class who widened the inequality gap in the country to
a large degree and those who are yet to find us a place in our national polity are the ones we have
allowed to always toss us around like the devil’s mail bag.
To those youths that obstreperously trooped out in support of the embattled Saraki, given their
demeanor, it is justifiably stupefied that mentality of wretchedness was at play.
With such mentality of wretchedness, will the goat (which has been existing in the same world with the leopard) ever be strong enough to kill
the leopard?

Ebola: Eight People On An Ebola Team Were Killed In Southeastern Guinea

They were traveling to raise awareness about the spread of the deadly Ebola virus. Instead, it seems, they encountered violence.

Eight people on an Ebola team were killed in southeastern Guinea, near the country's border with Liberia, a government spokesman said in a statement Thursday. Among them were health care workers and local journalists.

Residents in the small town of Womey threw stones at the Guinea Ebola team when they arrived earlier this week, forcing them to flee, spokesman Albert Damantang Camara said. Some members of the group were able to safely reach the nearby town of Nzerekore, he said, while nine others went to find refuge around Womey.
