Man dies in romp with prostitute in Aba

A man, identified as Ogadinma Chukwu, has lost his life while sleeping with a prostitute at a popular brothel located on St. Michael’s Road, Aba, Abia State.

Sources said the deceased, whom they alleged to be a regular visitor to the brothel, died while romping the prostitute.

It was gathered that immediately Chukwu slumped and died, the prostitute contacted her colleagues and the manager of the brothel who moved his corpse to a sanitary lane at the back of the brothel.

As a result of the development, shop owners around the area quickly closed business for fear of police arrest.

Those who spoke anonymously to our reporter disclosed that some staff of the brothel at about 5 p.m. brought out the corpse through their back door, dropped it at the sanitary lane and disappeared.

When our correspondent visited the area, the brothel was deserted as people were gathering at the adjoining St. Michael’s Road by York Street junction and Hospital Road.

Ghana gives hospital 14 days to find ‘missing babies’

Ghana’s health minister has given a hospital in the city of Kumasi 14 days to produce the bodies of five babies that were allegedly stillborn.

Seven people were charged with stealing and conspiracy to steal a baby from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital earlier in February.

Suwaiba Mumuni, whose baby is among the five missing, told the BBC she believes her child is still alive.

The hospital, the second largest in Ghana, has denied the allegations.

The BBC’s Sammy Darko in the capital, Accra, says the case of the missing babies has caused outrage in Ghana.

Youths stormed the hospital in Kumasi, 270km (167 miles) north-west of Accra, on Thursday, temporarily closing the maternity wards, he says.

Anti-gay law: World Bank postpones $90m Uganda loan

The World Bank has postponed a $90m (£54m) loan to Uganda over its tough new anti-gay law that has drawn criticism from around the world.

World Bank officials said they wanted to guarantee the projects the loan was destined to support were not going to be adversely affected by the new law.

The loan was intended to boost Uganda’s health services.

The new law, enacted on Monday, strengthens already strict legislation relating to homosexuals in the country.

It allows life imprisonment as the penalty for acts of “aggravated homosexuality” and also criminalises the “promotion” of homosexuality”.

Elimination of discrimination

The law has been sharply criticised by the West, with donors such as Denmark and Norway saying they would redirect aid away from the government to aid agencies.

OLUSEGUN OBASANJO (OBASANJO FARM)
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is not only a retired army officer, former head of state and politician, he is also a successful farmer. He owns Ota Farm, which is also called Obasanjo Farms. The large farm was formally opened on October 8, 1979, a week after Obasanjo handed over power to a civilian administration on October 1, 1979. At inception, the farm took off as Temperance Enterprises Limited (Farming Venture). It later became Obasanjo Farms Nigeria Limited.

ABDULSALAMI ABUBABAKAR (MAIZUBE FARMS)

DRC hopes to change world with traffic robots

(YouTube)Can giant robots with a deep voice and massive arms be the answer to easing traffic chaos in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo?

A small co-operative, which developed the novel solution and is testing two robots at key intersections, thinks so and wants to promote the concept across the country, Africa and the world.

Initial feedback is positive, from both the public and officials.

"God bless those who invented it", said taxi bus driver Franck Mavuzi stuck in traffic. "The robot is good."

Like many African capitals, Kinshasa, a city of 10 million people, has a reputation for chaotic driving and huge traffic jams. Tricolour traffic lights are rare, many cars are old and battered and not all drivers are mindful of the highway code.

And traffic police, who earn minimal salaries, are often accused of extorting money from motorists.

Nasa discovers 715 new worlds

(Nasa, AFP)Nasa on Wednesday announced a torrent of new planet discoveries, hailing a "bonanza" of 715 worlds now known outside the solar system thanks to the Kepler space telescope's planet-hunting mission.

A new method for verifying potential planets led to the volume of new discoveries from Kepler, which aims to help humans search for other worlds that may be like Earth.

"What we have been able to do with this is strike the mother lode, get a veritable exoplanet bonanza", Jack Lissauer, a planetary scientist at Nasa, told reporters.

"We have almost doubled just today the number of planets known to humanity", he said.

The 715 newly verified planets are orbiting 305 different stars.

The latest announcement brings the number of known planets to nearly 1 700.

Smartphone companies beef up its cameras

Seoul - Expect sharper, clearer selfies this year.

Samsung has beefed up the camera in its Galaxy S5 smartphone due for April release and added smarter camera software, following Sony and Nokia in their upgrades of handset cameras.

The tweaks mean smartphone photos, ubiquitous nowadays because of social media such as Facebook and Twitter, will be closer in quality to images captured by digital single-lens reflex cameras, also known as DSLR.

How to give a super-thin smartphone the power of a DSLR camera that can capture moving images with clarity is a key challenge for the likes of Samsung, Sony, Nokia and LG as they try to differentiate their offerings in a crowded handset market.

Their efforts to make smartphone cameras more powerful have taken a toll on the compact, point-and-shoot camera market, but catching up to the high-end cameras used by professional photographers had appeared a far-fetched ambition.

Boeing making ultra-safe smartphone

US aircraft manufacturer Boeing has developed a smartphone geared mainly toward people working in defence and homeland security, the company said on its website on Wednesday.

Boeing filed papers this week with the Federal Communications Commission describing the phone, which is called Boeing Black, uses Google's Android system and is made in the US.

"The US defence and security communities demand trusted access to data to accomplish their missions", the web site says.

"The Boeing Black smartphone was designed with security and modularity in mind to ensure our customers can use the same smartphone across a range of missions and configurations", it adds without specifying if the phone is already on sale.

Arizona gay bill splits Republicans

(File, AP)Phoenix - When Arizona's governor vetoed a bill that would have allowed businesses to refuse service to gays on religious grounds, she exposed a fracture within the Republican Party between social conservatives and pro-business moderates.

Democrats hope to exploit it ahead of midterm elections in November that will decide control of Congress.

Republicans are torn between its conservative base and centrists horrified by the legislation, which opponents called an excuse for outright discrimination against gays.

This week's veto, along with a continuing series of court rulings against states' bans on gay marriage, has left conservatives dispirited. Opponents of gay marriage are struggling to find their footing.

"It's leading people to say: 'We're not sure where the Republican party is on something as basic as economic freedom,'" said Dan Holler, a spokesperson for Heritage Action, a Washington-based conservative group that argued the Arizona proposal was aimed simply at allowing people to run businesses as they saw fit.

"There certainly is a risk, especially as you head into the midterm elections, when the turnout of your base is essential."

Al-Qaeda plots comeback in Afghanistan

Washington - Al-Qaeda's Afghanistan leader is laying the groundwork to re-launch his war-shattered organisation once the United States and international forces withdraw from the country, as they have warned they will do without a security agreement from the Afghan government, US officials say.

Farouq al-Qahtani al-Qatari has been cementing local ties and bringing in small numbers of experienced militants to train a new generation of fighters, and US military and intelligence officials say they have increased drone and jet missile strikes against him and his followers in the mountainous eastern provinces of Kunar and Nuristan.

The objective is to keep him from restarting the large training camps that once drew hundreds of followers before the US-led war began.

The officials say the counterterrorism campaign - a key reason the Obama administration agreed to keep any troops in Afghanistan after 2014 - could be jeopardised by the possibility of a total pullout.

House Intelligence Committee Chairperson Mike Rogers said the number of al-Qaeda members in Afghanistan has risen but is not much higher than the several hundred or so the US has identified in the past.

"I think most are waiting for the US to fully pull out by 2014," he said.

China hits back at US in human rights report

Beijing - China on Friday issued a report on human rights in the US, denouncing it for foreign drone strikes, state-sponsored spying and "rampant" gun crime after Washington criticised its rights record.

Beijing said the US "concealed and avoided mentioning its own human rights problems", such as a government-run intelligence programme known as Prism which it said "seriously infringes on human rights".

The document came after the State Department issued its annual global human rights report on Thursday.

The report, released by China's State Council, or cabinet, singled out the US for criticism for drone strikes in countries such as Pakistan, which it said have caused "heavy civilian casualties".

It also said the US suffers from "rampant gun violence", while its agricultural sector employs a "large amount of child labourers".

Washington's report released on Thursday praised China for some successes in human rights, such as the abolition of some labour camps and a change to the one-child policy.

But it added that "repression and coercion, particularly against organisations and individuals involved in civil and political rights advocacy... were routine".

It also noted Beijing's continued repression of ethnic Uighurs and Tibetans.

Divorce debate challenges Pope Francis

Pope Francis prays during his general audience in St Peter's square at the Vatican. (Vincenzo Pinto, AFP)Vatican City - The issue of divorce is stoking a spirited debate between Catholic cardinals and revealing the challenges and expectations for Pope Francis after his promises to put the Church more in touch with modern life.

The question is whether divorcees who re-marry should be allowed to take part in the most sacred point of Catholic mass, Holy Communion, which is forbidden under current rules that in practice are often not observed.

Changing the doctrine could in turn alter Church rules on marriage annulments and raise broader questions about the institution of marriage, prompting lively exchanges between traditionalists and reformers.

Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, the archbishop of Lyon in France, told Vatican radio that a meeting of cardinals from around the world in the Vatican this month devoted "80 to 90%" of the time to discussing the issue.

German Cardinal Ludwig Mueller, head of the Church's doctrinal watchdog, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has said the current rules are "impossible to change" and that people should stop thinking of marriage as "a party in a church".

Honduran Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, a member of the council of eight cardinals established by the pope to advise him, has taken a more lenient line and has asked Mueller to be "more flexible".

Ukraine: Russian military blocking airport

Russian military were blocking an airport in the Black Sea port of Sevastopol in Crimea near the Russian naval base while unidentified men were patrolling another airport serving the regional capital, Ukraine's new Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said on Friday.

Avakov wrote in a Facebook post that the Belbek international airport in Sevastopol was blocked by military units of the Russian navy.

"I can only describe this as a military invasion and occupation," Avakov said.

The Russian foreign ministry refused to comment while a spokesperson for the Russian defence ministry was not available for comment.

It was not immediately clear whether the other airport, in Sevastopol, was open.

Early on Friday, dozens of armed men in military uniforms without markings were seen patrolling the airport in Simferopol, the capital of Crimea. The airport appeared to be operating normally, with flights arriving and departing.

No violence has been reported at either airport.

I’ll keep scoring ‘until I am 50’ – Eto’o

Samuel Eto’ohas laughed off the leaked remarks from Chelsea manager José Mourinho questioning his age, joking that if he can manage a hat-trick against Manchester United “at 37” he must have plenty of years left in the tank.

On Wednesday evening, the Blues secured a 1-1 draw in their Champions League last-16 first leg with Galatasaray. The buildup to the match was dominated by comments made in private by the Portuguese concerning his strikers, in particular Eto’o.

samuel-etooCanal Plus broadcast video of Mourinho telling a businessman at a recent sponsor’s event: “The problem with Chelsea is I lack a striker. Eto’o is 32 years old, maybe 35, who knows?”

Anelka gets five-match ban for ‘quenelle’

Nicolas Anelka’s future in English football was in the balance after the former France striker was given a five-match ban on Thursday for making a gesture widely condemned as anti-Semitic.

The Football Association found the French striker guilty of an “aggravated breach” of their rules for making the ‘quenelle’ playing for West Bromwich Albion in a Premier League match away to West Ham in December.

That saw the 34-year-old banned and fined £80,000 (97,468 euros, $133,368).

He was also ordered to complete a “compulsory education course” although he does have the right of appeal.

An official death toll in the attacks was not available as of 9.40pm on Thursday. But the British Broadcasting Corporation Hausa Service put it at 37 while the Agence France Presse reported 33.

Banks, shops, part of a local government secretariat and houses were reported to have been looted and burnt during the six-hour simultenous raids on the three communities – Michika, Gulak , Shuwa and Krichinga – by the militants.

Gov Amaechi is a kidnapper - PDP

The Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has accused the state Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, of masterminding the kidnap of the Chairman of the party in Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Mr. Ikechi Chinda, a former member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Chinyere Igwe and Mr. Allwell Ihunda.

The state Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Felix Obuah, said the three members of the party were abducted by unidentified gunmen at about 8pm on Wednesday around Eagle Island axis of Port Harcourt.

He expressed surprise that the governor was playing politics with the security of lives and property and branding his political opponents his worst enemies.

Gala's Mancini rates Chelsea narrow favourites to progess

Roberto Mancini rates Chelsea narrow favourites to reach the Champions League quarter-finals despite Galatasaray finishing the better side in the first-leg 1-1 draw.
The Turkish side's manager was relieved his open tactics in the first 25 minutes on Wednesday did not result in more than the one goal his team conceded.
But Galatasaray could have stolen victory after Aurelien Chedjou's equaliser midway through the second half cancelled out Fernando Torres's ninth-minute opener.
Mancini felt brave enough to suggest his team could finish the job in London having rated Chelsea's chances of success at 80 percent before the first leg.
"We should have started more aggressively. During the first 20 minutes we had too much respect for Chelsea and we made four or five mistakes, one of which resulted in the goal, but apart from that we played well," Mancini said.
"Seeing the second half, I think my players saw what we are capable of and we now know we can actually go through. It will be very difficult but we can go through. I think we have a 40 per cent chance."

Wenger not giving up hope

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes it is too early to judge whether English sides are in decline in the Champions League despite three of the four Premier League sides losing the first leg of their last 16 ties.
Arsenal lost 2-0 at home to European champions Bayern Munich, after being reduced to 10 men in the first half, and their French coach said no conclusions can be drawn until after the second legs.
"I think you have first to realise that all four (English) teams came out of the group stage. That means the level is there," Wenger said on Thursday.
"After only one game, you cannot judge a general trend."
Ten-man Manchester City lost 2-0 to Barcelona, English champions Manchester United went down by the same score to Olympiakos and Chelsea drew at Galatasaray in the last 16.

Honours even in Istanbul

Chelsea have the upper hand in their Champions League last-16 tie with Galatasaray after coming away from a testing environment in Istanbul with a 1-1 first-leg draw on Wednesday. The visitors led at half-time thanks to an early goal from Fernando Torres, but Galatasaray improved in the second half and restored parity after the hour mark when Cameroon defender Aurelien Chedjou found the net.

A draw was a fair reflection of the way the game went, but Chelsea will now hope to finish the job in the return at Stamford Bridge on March 18.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho opted to select Torres in attack ahead of Samuel Eto'o in one of three changes to the team that beat Everton at the weekend, with Ramires and Andre Schuerrle also coming in.

It proved to be an excellent decision as it was Torres who finished off a clinical breakaway to put the Blues in front with just nine minutes played, giving Chelsea the lead they deserved as their hosts paid for a poor start.

US confirms delegation to Centenary Celebration

According to the Embassy, other members that will represent President Barack Obama and the country will include Honorable James Entwistle, United States Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

One of the activities lined up for the celebration is the centenary exhibition of what the nation has achieved since 1914.

United States wished the country well ahead of the celebrations.

“This centenary celebration presents us an opportunity to count our blessings as a nation, celebrate our dexterity and resilience as a people and resolve to launch into the next century with renewed determination, hope and expectations,” the Embassy stated.

The two-day celebrations end on Friday.

Schools, university empty after deadly Yobe attack

Terrified studentshave fled boarding schools after an attack by suspected Boko Haram extremists in which 43 students were shot and hacked to death and the whole school razed.
Students refused to stay overnight in their schools and colleges in the wake of the attack on the Federal Government College in Buni Yadi, Yobe state on Tuesday.
"Most students of boarding secondary schools have vacated their hostels and moved back to their homes after news of the Buni Yadi attack," Yunusa Ahmed, who lives in the state capital Damaturu, told AFP.
Ahmed's son is currently studying at the city's Government Secondary School but has now moved back home along with two classmates.
"They went to school today (Wednesday) but returned after classes ended because they are too afraid to sleep in the school for fear of a Boko Haram attack," Ahmed said.
Last October Yobe state authorities said Boko Haram fighters burnt down 209 schools, causing damage worth an estimated $15.6 million (11.4 million euros).
The attacks are taking their toll on education in a region that already lags behind the rest of Nigeria in social and economic development.

Oscar Pistorius Was Looking At Porn Websites On His Phone The Night Reeva Died

Oscar Pistorius, Reeva Steenkamp
It’s been revealed that Oscar Pistorius was watching pornography on his mobile phone the night he shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
Local media reports that based on the court papers that leaked from the investigation, data from his phone showed that the murder suspect visited the porn sites on his phone while Reeva was at his home.
Prosecutors wonder why a man who claims ‘he was spending quality time with his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day’ would be on several porn sites while she’s with him. This action they say is in direct contrast of his claim. The phone was recovered after his arrest.

Eto'o row overshadows Chelsea trip to Turkey

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on Tuesday vented his fury following the broadcast of comments he made 'off the record' about striker Samuel Eto'o, as the Premier League club prepared to face Galatasaray in the Champions League.
The focus moved away from the first leg of their last-16 tie in Istanbul on Wednesday to the fall-out caused by the broadcast of what Mourinho thought was a private conversation on French television.
On Sunday night, Canal Plus showed Mourinho talking about Eto'o, joking that nobody knew whether the Cameroonian was 32 years old or 35 while also saying that he could be tempted to move for Monaco's Colombian striker Radamel Falcao, because "I don't have a centre-forward and he doesn't have a team. He plays in front of 3,000 people."
But, before Chelsea's eve of game training session at the base of Galatasaray's rivals Kasimpasa, outside Istanbul, Mourinho hit out at the journalist responsible for the recording.
"I think you (all) should be embarrassed as media professionals because from an ethical point of view you can't be happy that a colleague can record a private conversation and make it public," said the Portuguese.

Dortmund rout rusty Zenit

Borussia Dortmund are poised for the Champions League's quarter-finals after Robert Lewandowski scored twice in Tuesday's 4-2 win at Zenit St Petersburg in their last 16, first-leg clash.
Dortmund raced into a 2-0 lead after only five minutes as Henrikh Mkhitaryan, then Marco Reus scored to leave the Russians reeling.
The hosts pulled two goals back after the break as central midfielder Oleg Shatov scored, then Brazil's Hulk converted a penalty.
On both occasions Dortmund gave the perfect response as Lewandowski scored just seconds later as the Germans take a commanding lead home for the second leg on March 19.
Zenit got off to a nightmare start as both of Reus' first two touches led to goals.
With barely four minutes gone, the Germany winger muscled through the Zenit defence and on to a Lewandowski pass.
When he went to ground, central midfielder Mkhitaryan fired home to put last season's Champions League finalists ahead.

United stunned by Olympiakos

Manchester United were shunted towards an unscheduled exit in the Champions League after crashing to a shock 2-0 defeat at Olympiakos in their last 16 first-leg match on Tuesday.
Goals from Alejandro Dominguez and Arsenal loanee Joel Campbell gave Olympiakos victory at a raucous Karaiskakis Stadium, to leave the Greek champions on the brink of the last eight for the first time since 1999.
It was the first time United had ever lost to a Greek team, but their error-prone display was fully in keeping with a season in which the self-belief of the Alex Ferguson era has thoroughly abandoned them.
Previously unbeaten in the group phase, David Moyes's side conceded defeat with a whimper on a chastening night in the Athenian port of Piraeus, failing to muster a single shot on target.
Eleven points off fourth-place Liverpool in the Premier League, their hopes of playing in next season's Champions League were already fading, and they now face a fight to stay alive in this season's competition in the return leg on March 19.

Anti-gay law: US senator wants Uganda aid freeze

An influential US lawmaker on Tuesday proposed withholding aid to Uganda after the African nation's president signed a controversial new measure imposing life prison sentences for homosexuals.

"I am deeply concerned by the decision of President [Yoweri] Museveni of Uganda to sign into law the anti-homosexuality bill," Senator Patrick Leahy, the most senior member of the chamber and chairperson of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in a statement.

"Much of US assistance to Uganda is for the people of Uganda, including those in the Ugandan LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] community whose human rights are being so tragically violated," he added.

"But we need to closely review all US assistance to Uganda, including through the World Bank and other multilateral organisations."

Actor Emeka Ike Evicted From Rented Duplex Over Failure To Pay N8.5 Million Rent

Nollywood actor, Emeka Ike who has been thrown out of his rented apartment in Magodo GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, over his inability to pay an accumulated three year rent of N8.5 million.
The apartment, a twin duplex located at 1, Raji Oladimeji Street, Magodo GRA, was until his ejection, used by Emeka to run his business.
Emeka had in 2007 diversified by establishing a secondary school named St Nicholas College and decided to hire the premises on a five-year lease agreement from an 87-year-old retiree, Chief Samuel Agboola Akintan at the rate of N2 million per annum for the first two years and N3 million annually for the remaining three years, bringing the total rent of five years to N13 million.
Saturday Sun gathered that Emeka was able to get his landlord accept a deposit of N2 million with a promise to pay the rest later. Trouble, however, started when a year after moving in, the popular actor began to default and at a point issued a dud cheque of N1.5 million.
To force Emeka to pay his money and eject him from the property, Chief Akintan through his company, Samak Investments Ltd, had to drag the actor to the Ikeja Magistrate court.Without much delay, the court had on November 22, last year ordered the actor to vacate the premises but his refusal to heed the order led the court Sheriff to carry out execution of the judgment on January 24 this year when his property was thrown out.

Sanusi Drags Jonathan To Court

Embattled Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Tuesday, went before a Federal High Court siting in Abuja to challenge the powers of President Goodluck Jonathan to suspend him from office.
In the suit he filed through a consortium of lawyers led by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Chief Kola Awodein, Sanusi, told the high court that his purported suspension was as a result of some discrepancies he discovered in respect of amounts repatriated to the federation account from the proceed of crude oil sales between the period of January, 2012 and July, 2013.

He maintained that his sin was that upon discovering the financial anomalies, he had cause to inform the National Assembly considering the fact that the revenue of the federation and the national economy was directly affected.

How to speed up your metabolism.

We have all wished for a faster metabolism to burn kilojoules more efficiently at some point in our lives. Though our basal metabolic rate (the energy that our body expends while resting) is generally determined by our genetics, all hope is not lost. Here are a few clever ways to get that much-desired boost.

 Eat breakfast

Kick-start your day, and your metabolism, with breakfast. After a night’s rest your body has been fasting for around 10 to 12 hours, and is “starving” for fuel, so eating a healthy breakfast literally wakes up your metabolism.

Choose a breakfast high in fibre and protein (like muesli with nuts and yoghurt or scrambled egg on whole-wheat toast), and steer away from sugar and fats. It’s also wise to eat foods high in Vitamin D and calcium which, according to new research, may increase fat oxidation rates and energy burning during the course of the day. People who eat breakfast are less likely to overeat later in the day and tend to have fewer weight problems.

Go for Omega-3s

According to research, the regular consumption of omega-3 fatty acids reduces the risk of becoming obese and stimulates the secretion of leptin, a hormone that helps regulate metabolism. Omega-3’s also reduce hunger pangs and improve blood sugar and insulin levels. Get your daily dose of omega-3’s by eating lots of fish like tuna, salmon, mackerel, trout, sardines and herring. If you don’t like fish, try flaxseed oil, canola oil, walnuts or eggs fortified with omega-3s. You can also take a daily omega-3 fatty acid supplement.

Teen babysitter gives little boy love bites

A US teen was arrested and charged after leaving bite marks on the neck of a nine-year-old boy. 18-year-old Tawny Hickman had allegedly been babysitting the youngster who had slept over at her house, according to WPBF.com. When the boy returned home, his mother noted “hickey-type marks” on his neck, prompting her to call 911.

The boy’s mother claimed that Hickman had been babysitting the boy, and that she’d ignored neighbourhood rumours about “stuff going on” between the pair.

The boy had allegedly joined his babysitter in her bedroom where they’d bitten each other- she reportedly had bite marks on her abdomen. She has been charged with child abuse and battery.

More trouble for Sanusi

More trouble may still be lurking the way of suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria , Saanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Odi community in Bayelsa State has asked a Federal High Court to commit him and other top officials of the bank to prison for their failure to pay the sum of N37 616 871 000 compensation to the victims of the 1999 massacre as directed by the court.

Other officials of the bank that the community is seeking to commit to jail include the acting Governor of the CBN, Sarah Alade; Deputy Governor Corporate Services Directorate, Suleiman Barau, Deputy Governor Financial System Stability, Dr. Kingsley Moghalu and the bank’s Head of legal services S. M. Onekut, report ThisDay.

The CBN was one of the judgment debtors in the ruling of Jstice Lambo Akanbi in 2013.  Others judgement debtors are the President, the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff and the Attorney General of the Federation.

Next central bank chief a steady hand, who'll keep out of politics

The country's incoming central bank governor Godwin Emefiele is seen as a steady hand who will maintain tight monetary policy in the face of currency weakness and avoid his predecessor's controversial forays into politics.
President Goodluck Jonathan swiftly nominated Emefiele as the next governor last week after suspending incumbent Lamido Sanusi, who had become an increasingly vocal critic of the government's record on corruption.
Sanusi, internationally respected for his commitment to reining in inflation, implementing a successful bailout of Nigerian banks in 2009 and cracking down on money laundering and corruption in the banking sector, had been due to step down in June. His early departure caused a panic selloff in financial markets, although currency and stocks are now stabilising.
Emefiele, who at 52 is the same age as Sanusi, boasts more than 20 years' experience in the banking sector. He is the managing director of Zenith Bank, Nigeria's third biggest, where he has built a well-capitalised and stable institution, banking sources say.
"He's done a solid job at Zenith and is likely to be a steady hand who will be calm, but markets are jittery right now, so he's got a challenge on his hands," a Nigerian banking source said, asking not to be named.

UEFA: Olympiakos v Manchester United factfile.

Factfile on Olympiakos and Manchester United ahead of the Champions League last 16, first leg tie between the clubs on Tuesday:
Form: Given their very high standards, Manchester United are enduring a torrid season under Alex Ferguson's replacement David Moyes. Cut adrift of the top four in the Premier League, a return to next season's Champions League seems highly unlikely unless they can win the trophy for the fourth time in Lisbon in May.
At least, after winning their group ahead of a limited Bayer Leverkusen side, they appear to have been handed a reasonably kind draw in the last 16. Olympiakos are unbeaten in their domestic league and seem certain to win yet another Greek title, but this is a big step up for a side that has lost top scorer Kostantinos Mitroglou, who was sold to Fulham in January.

Chelsea '10 times better than Galatasaray' - Drogba

Didier Drogba has said former club Chelsea are "10 times better" than his current side, Galatasaray, ahead of the teams' Champions League meeting in Istanbul on Wednesday.
"Are Chelsea better than Galatasaray? Yes, they are 10 times better," the Galatasaray striker, now 35, told the BBC on the eve of the last 16 clash.
"If I play it is to win. It will be tough but Juve were better than us, so anything can happen. If there's a one percent chance of us winning. I'll believe it."
Drogba spent eight years at Chelsea, scoring 157 goals in 342 games and won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups and also scored the winning penalty against Bayern Munich in the 2012 Champions League final -- his final kick in a Blues shirt.
"It will be difficult," he said of playing against London club Chelsea.
"You don't stay eight years in a place you don't like, especially in football -- it is very emotional. I love Chelsea but I play for Galatasaray now and I will give everything for them.
"When you're happy at a club, you want to stay forever," said Drogba who joined Chelsea from Marseille for 24 million ($40m, 29m euros) in July 2004.
"But sometimes you can't do everything you want to do. I am proud of what I achieved."
Asked about the possibility of working again with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, the Ivory Coast forward said: "They say in French 'avec des si. Rome ne s'est pas construite en un jour' (there are lots of ifs. Rome wasn't built in a day). It is only if and if and if. We are not there yet."
And he insisted he was happy working under current boss Roberto Mancini, the former Manchester City manager.
"They're very different, two different personalities but with the same mentality. They want to win, they want to win trophies. They are winners."
But he said he was still friendly with Mourinho.
"There is a lot of respect. When there is somebody that important, who looks at you like a friend, you forget that he is 'The Special One' and you are the striker. "It is a man-to-man relationship, a friendship.

Russell Crowe Lobbies Pope Francis to See 'Noah'

The Vatican has yet to respond with whether the pontiff will watch Darren Aronofsky's controversial biblical drama.

ROME – Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe has been lobbying to get Pope Francis to agree to watch his new biblical adventure story Noah. But there is little sign that the spiritual leader of the world's 1.1 billion Catholics will comply.
Religious audiences have been split in their views on the mega-budget Darren Aronofsky production, which will hit cinemas in the U.S. March 28 and come to Italy two weeks later. Paramount Pictures says that more than 4 out of 5 religious moviegoers say they are interested in seeing the film, but some Christian groups say it strays too far from the biblical story to make it more palatable for the big screen.
Crowe used social media in his lobby effort, tweeting to the pope that the film’s message is "powerful, fascinating, resonant" and, in another message, calling on his 1.37 million Twitter followers to use their own tweets in an effort to cajole Francis into watching the film.

“I make love to my boss every day at work” – Nigerian sex addict tells reporter

A reporter met the shock of his life few days back at the Elegushi beach in the Victoria Island area of Lagos as he engaged the lady pictured above in a discussion. To his disbelief the 26 years old lady, identified as Ella, boldly told the reporter that she loves sex so much so that she enjoys it more than real food.
“See, I don’t need money from any guy. All I want is good, hot sex! But the problem I have with most of you guys is that you are not bold enough to ask a girl you just met for sex even though you all want it. Most girls want it too, they want you to just make the move to shag them. Even if they are complaining or insulting you don’t stop. You know we girls pretend a lot.”

The lady, whose ID revealed she is a marketer with a new generation bank, revealed that:
She likes going to the beach which is very close her apartment, every evening to have a good rest and ‘most importantly get laid’.
As if that was not enough, Ella threw the bombshell “I have sex with my boss every day in his office. The chauffeur too every evening, but they can’t satisfy me at all. That’s why I have to come here every evening to get laid by more guys. I must have sex at least 8 times every day. It’s like heaven!”.
Ella went on to explain to the reporter that she couldn’t wait to complete this week’s dose of 56 rounds.
She also acknowledged the fact that many would think it is abnormal, but she insisted that making love eight times a day can’t really satisfy her. She says there is nothing wrong in being an addict.
“All the men I have met always have to admit they can’t cope with my sexual urge,” she boasted

Boko Haram kills 29 pupils in Yobe

Gunmen from Boko Haram stormed a boarding school in Yobe overnight and killed 29 pupils, many of whom died in flames as the school was burned to the ground, police and the military said on Tuesday.
"Some of the students bodies were burned to ashes," Police Commissioner Sanusi Rufai said of the attack on the Federal Government college of Buni Yadi, a secondary school in Yobe state, near the state's capital city of Damaturu.
All those killed were boys. No girls were touched, Rufai said.
Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sinful" in the northern Hausa language, have frequently attacked schools in the past. A similar attack in June in the village of Mamudo left 22 students dead.
More than 200 people were killed in two attacks last week, one in which militants razed a whole village and shot panicked residents as they tried to flee.
The failure of the military to protect civilians is fuelling anger in the northeast, the region worst affected by the four- and-a-half-year-old insurgency. An offensive ordered by President Goodluck Jonathan in May has failed to crush the rebels and triggered reprisals against civilians.
A military spokesman for Yobe state, Captain Lazarus Eli, confirmed the attack and said "Our men are down there in pursuit of the killers."
Addressing a news conference on Monday, Jonathan defended the military's record, saying it had had some successes against Boko Haram. He also said Nigeria was working with the Cameroon authorities to try to prevent the militants from mounting attacks in Nigeria and then fleeing over the border.
The military shut the northern part of the border with Cameroon on the weekend. The insurgents mostly occupy the remote, hilly Gwoza area bordering Cameroon, from where they attack civilians they accuse of being pro-government. They have also started abducting scores of girls, a new tactic reminiscent of Uganda's cult-like Lord's Resistance Army in decades past.

A White Robber Who Carried Out Six Raids Disguised As A Black Man

A white man who pleaded guilty to six robberies in Ohio used a black mask so lifelike that police initially arrested a black man for one of the crimes.

The mother of the wrongly accused man even thought a photo of the robbery suspect she saw on television was a photo of her son.

Conrad Zdzierak, 30, pleaded guilty Monday in Hamilton County Ohio to one count of aggravated robbery and five counts of robbery in a plea deal with prosecutors. He faces up to 35 years in prison at his January 7 sentencing.

In exchange, prosecutors dismissed 12 charges and decided not to seek indictments for other crimes, prosecutor spokeswoman Julie Wilson said.

'Conrad apologises to everyone, is sorry for any harm he has caused and accepts responsibility for his actions,' his lawyer Christopher McDowell said.

Zdzierak stole about $15,000 in the robberies of four banks, a credit union and a pharmacy that occurred in March and April - crimes in which witnesses reported that the robber was black and surveillance video appeared to show a black man.

Zdzierak's masked resemblance to the black man who was initially arrested was so similar that some witnesses even identified a photo of the black man as the one who robbed them, McDowell said.
The prosecutor's office would not release the name of the wrongly accused man.

Zdzierak was arrested at a hotel after his girlfriend called police after seeing reports of the robberies and finding two masks and money stained by dye that is used to track robbers, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

McDowell said his client purchased the masks from SPFXmasks, based in Van Nuys, California. The silicone masks 'look and behave like real flesh and muscle,' the company's website says.

Owner Rusty Slusser said Tuesday his company's masks are normally bought for movies, Halloween, haunted houses and stage shows, but the Ohio case was not the first time they have been used for criminal purposes.

'We do not condone any illegal activity with our masks,' Slusser said.

US: 'abhorrent' Uganda gay law marks a 'sad day'

The United States said Monday that the signing of an "abhorrent" anti-gay law by Uganda's president Yoweri Museveni marked a "sad day" for his country and the world.

Museveni signed the bill despite warnings from Washington that he was putting US relations with Kampala at risk and amid fears that aid donors could also react badly.

"Instead of standing on the side of freedom, justice, and equal rights for its people, today, regrettably, Ugandan President Museveni took Uganda a step backward by signing into law legislation criminalising homosexuality," said White House spokesperson Jay Carney in a statement.

"As President Obama has said, this law is more than an affront and a danger to the gay community in Uganda, it reflects poorly on the country's commitment to protecting the human rights of its people and will undermine public health, including efforts to fight HIV/Aids."

Carney said Washington would continue to urge Uganda to repeal the "abhorrent" law.

The anti-gay bill cruised through parliament in December after its architects agreed to drop a death penalty clause.

It holds that repeat homosexuals should be jailed for life, outlaws the promotion of homosexuality and legally obliges people to denounce gays to the police.

Earlier, in a first US reaction, President Barack Obama's national security advisor Susan Rice weighed in against Museveni.

"Nobody should be discriminated against or punished for who they are or whom they love," Rice said on Twitter.

"Sad day for Uganda and the world," she added.

Muslims seek refuge in CAR church

The Christian militiamen know hundreds of Muslims are hiding here on the grounds of the Catholic church and now they're giving them a final ultimatum: Leave Central African Republic within a week or face death at the hands of machete-wielding youths.

On Monday, some of the 30 Cameroonian peacekeepers fired into the air to disperse angry militia fighters congregated outside the concrete walls of the church compound. The gunfire sent traumatised children running for cover and set off a chorus of wails throughout the courtyard.

The peacekeepers are all that stands between nearly 800 Muslims and the armed gangs who want them dead. Already the fighters known as the anti-Balaka have brought 40 litres of gasoline and threatened to burn the church to the ground.

Even the Reverend Justin Nary, who takes in more Muslims by the day, knows he too is a marked man in the eyes of anti-Balaka.

"Walking through town I've had guns pointed in my face four times," he says. "They call my phone and say they'll kill me once the peacekeepers are gone."

Some of those seeking refuge fled from the village of Guen, about 100km away, after at least 70 Muslims were killed there, according to the Reverend Rigobert Dolongo who said he helped bury the bodies.

Muslims and Christians lived together in Carnot in relative peace for generations until a Muslim rebellion from the country's far north overthrew the government and unleashed total chaos. The rebels known as Seleka were blamed for scores of massacres on predominantly Christian villages across the country.

Wave of violent vengeance

When they were forced from power in January, it unleashed a wave of violent vengeance against Muslims throughout the anarchic nation. In the capital, angry mobs killed and mutilated anyone suspected of having supported the Seleka. The Christian militia known as the anti-Balaka stormed Carnot in early February when the Seleka fled.

The situation in the capital, Bangui, appears to have stabilised somewhat, but the sectarian violence continues in the countryside.

Ahamat Mahamat, 41, narrowly escaped death and his younger brother was killed. Now he sits under the shade of a tree on the church grounds, his hand bandaged to cover his healing machete wounds meted by the Christian militia fighters.

Even as the brownish iodine oozes through his bandages, he vows to stay on in Carnot despite the threat and wants to return to his job photographing Muslim and Christian weddings. He himself is married to a Christian, who has fled to the church with him and their three children.

"I was born here. I grew up here. I have no problems with my neighbours. They even come to visit me here at the church and bring me food and other help," he says.

Others here, though, bitterly recall how the militiamen pillaged their mosques, stealing their prayer mats and setting their holy Qurans ablaze.

Marafa Abdulhamane, 73, wipes tears from his eyes when he recalls how they surrounded his home and ordered him to leave under threat of death. A native of Cameroon, he has lived in Carnot for 50 years. While some neighbors packed up his things that remained and brought them to him in a suitcase at the church compound, he's made up his mind to try and leave.

"My shop has been looted and my home has been taken over by Christians. Where will I go?" he says. "They say they don't want us wearing our traditional robes in town or saying 'Allah Akbar' anymore. It's as though they don't want Muslims or anything Islamic here anymore."

Armed protection

Now he sits near the steps of the church with his friends, stroking his prayer beads as the Catholic priests prepare the area for Sunday Mass. There is no longer a mosque to pray at. No announcement of the call to prayer. On the grounds of the church, the men kneel on rice sacks pointed toward Mecca and whisper their prayers.

He and his friends laugh when asked if they ever thought they would live at a church. However, they recognize the gravity of the situation that now faces them.

"If it weren't for the church and the peacekeepers, we'd all be dead," says Mahmoud Laminou, who has been here for two weeks.

About 150 of the refugees who could prove they had ties to Cameroon were evacuated though the rest still remain with no sign of when they might be rescued. As word spreads that the church is under armed protection, more arrive by the day.

On Monday, a truck with the African peacekeeping force delivered several Muslim families trapped inside the town and unable to reach the church except under armed escort. Trembling women handed their babies to people on the ground as they got down from the truck.

Worried parents forbid their children from playing soccer in the church yard, afraid that they would chase a ball outside and be killed by the surrounding gangs.

The priests here in Carnot have given away all their money to try and keep the anti-Balaka at bay. There are no aid groups here apart from a clinic operated by Medecins Sans Frontieres, or Doctors Without Borders. The Catholic church, though, is pledging to continue its work here no matter what the personal risk.

"For us they are not Muslims or Christians. They are people — people in danger," says the Rev. Dieu-Seni Bikowo. "The anti-Balaka are not Christians. They are thieves who are profiting from the anger against

I have power to suspend Sanusi - Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday said Lamido Sanusi still remained the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

He said while answering questions on Monday on Presidential Media Chat Jonathan said Sanusi was only asked to step aside to allow for proper investigation into issues raised by the Financial Reporting Council on the bank's 2012 audit report.

He said it would not be appropriate for Sanusi to be allowed to stay in his position because he was also the Chairman of the Board of the CBN.
He said Sanusi could come back “today or tomorrow” if he was cleared at the end of the investigations.

Jonathan, however, said he had full powers to suspend Sanusi as the CBN governor.

“Yes, I have absolute power. The CBN is not well defined in the Nigerian Constitution,” he said.

According to him, the president has oversight functions over the bank.

The president explained that the suspension was delayed in view of the need to consult widely and not to send a wrong signal.

“When dealing with the treasury of a nation, you have to be careful and consult widely.”

Government approves first quarter fuel imports

Queues in some filling stations in some states will soon disappear as the Federal Government has approved the importation of petroleum products.

The approval follows the release of the first quarter of 2014 fuel import allocations to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and private major marketer.

NNPC received 50% of the import allocation while 30 other private marketers were granted approval based on their capacity and track record in previous quarters.

The allocation, which was done through the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), is expected to end the current scarcity of petrol.

Nedbank to consider Ecobank governance issue

Before exercising its right to convert the $285 million loan it gave to Ecobank in 2011 into an equity holding, South African lender, Nedbank, will consider governance issue hovering over the Pan- African bank, reports Business Report.

Mike Brown, Nedbank chief executive, said the bank will take all factors into consideration before deciding on the next line of action in the deal.

Nedbank has until the end of November to convert the loan into an equity holding and then increase its stake to as much as 20 percent in Ecobank..

The deal has still not received regulators’ approval, although that is not seen as a problem.

Jonathan defends suspension of Sanusi

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said on Monday his decision to suspend the central bank governor had nothing to do with the governor's exposing corruption in the oil sector.
Jonathan suspended Governor Lamido Sanusi on Thursday on allegations he had mishandled the bank's budget. Sanusi, due to step down in June, was becoming an increasingly vocal critic of the government's record on tackling corruption.
The move caused a panic selloff in financial markets.
Sanusi had been presenting evidence to parliament that he said showed that state oil company Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) failed to pay $20 billion it owed to federal government coffers, fuelling speculation his suspension was an attempt to silence a whistleblower.
"The suspension of Sanusi has nothing to do with whistleblowing," Jonathan told local journalists in a televised news conference.
"The government normally places you on suspension pending investigation, and when they conclude the investigation, you may go back if there's no case against you."
He said an audit had been done of 2012 and 2013 central bank accounts that has shown several irregularities - the 2013 audit had just come in, which was enough to convince him there was a case against Sanusi, he said.
Sanusi has said he will challenge his suspension in court.
"The president has absolute powers to suspend the central bank governor," Jonathan said. "The president has oversight function over the central bank."
Jonathan denied that $20 billion could have gone missing from state oil revenues, saying he would not even "accept that one dollar should disappear".
The governor's suspicion of fraud in one of the world's most opaque national oil companies brought him into conflict with Jonathan a year before what are likely to be closely fought elections.
Jonathan was already under pressure from several corruption scandals and a failure to quell a four and half-year-old Islamist insurgency in the north that, while more or less contained in one area, appears to be becoming bloodier than ever. More than 200 people were killed in two attacks last week.
Jonathan told the journalists the military had had some successes against Boko Haram and that Nigeria was working with Cameroon authorities to try to prevent the militants mounting attacks on Nigerian soil then fleeing back over the border.
"The communities naturally will feel government is not giving them protection," he said. "But I promise that we will continue to improve.

Oil prices down in Asian trade

Oil prices eased in Asian trade on Tuesday as caution set into the market ahead of the release of US economic and stockpiles data, analysts said.
New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate for April delivery, fell 40 cents to $102.42 in mid-morning trade.
Brent North Sea crude for April was down 15c to $110.49.
"Lack of strong supportive news contributed to some downside in crude oil," Tan Chee Tat, investment analyst at Singapore-based Phillip Futures, told AFP.
Tan said Asian investors were wary that they could be in an "overbought situation" as the winter season in the West wanes and demand dips.
Prices could also come under pressure as stockpiles begin to surge due to the upcoming summer maintenance season in United States and North Sea refineries, Tan said.
Traders are expecting the latest US stockpiles data on Wednesday to show a dip at the Cushing, Oklahoma, depot as the return of cold weather in large parts of the country boosts current demand for heating oil.
US housing data to be released later on Tuesday will be closely watched "as markets looks towards assessing how much is weather a factor in stalling the US housing recovery in recent months", Singapore's United Overseas Bank said in a note.
Analysts are also closely monitoring potential supply disruptions in several crisis-hit oil-producing countries including Venezuela, Libya and South Sudan.
Ukraine, a major energy consumer, is also in focus after the dramatic ouster of its pro-Russian president and its appeal for $35bn in Western aid to stave off an economic meltdown.

Borno students want new strategies to tackle terrorism

Maiduguri - The National Union of Borno Students (NUBOSS) on Monday appealed to the Federal Government to explore new strategies of tackling the Boko Haram menace in the country.

NUBOSS made this appeal in a statement signed by its President, Isah Mohammed-Biu, in Maiduguri.

Mohammed-Biu in the statement, said government must take proactive measures to end the carnage by the Boko Haram sect.

"We wish to express our concern over the wanton destruction of lives and property by the sect, particularly in Borno. The renewed violence has disrupted the emerging peace in the state.

"As students, we feel the impact of the attacks on our parents, brothers and sisters in the society.

"As a pressure group, we are duty bound to call on the Federal Government to take proactive action to end the menace of the sect's activities.

"The government must explore new avenues, especially the use of sophisticated gadgets in fighting the terrorist group."

He lamented that many students had been killed in different attacks by the sect.

"Many students have been murdered in cold blood in the past and recent attacks by the sect without justification.

"We, therefore, call on the National Assembly to team up with the Federal Government to take a stand on the issue to
form a common front to fight the Boko Haram menace."

It commended Gov. Kashim Shettima’s continued assistance to victims of the attacks.

"We appreciate the efforts of Shettima in assisting the victims of the numerous attacks by rebuilding houses destroyed and paying medical bills of the injured", he said.

He called on the people to commence special prayers for divine intervention and return of peace to the state.

Osun Government re-opens school

The Osun Government on Monday ordered reopening of the Ansar Ud Deen High School, Osogbo, for full academic activities .

The government gave the directive in a statement made available in Osogbo.

The statement, signed by the Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Education, Lawrence Oyeniran, said that the school should re-open on Tuesday.

The school, located on the Resting Ground, Osogbo, was shut by the government on December 17, 2013, following an uprising by its students.

The statement advised parents and guardians to guard against unwholesome behaviour by their children and wards.

"Any student of the school who fails to conduct himself or herself within the established school rules and regulations will be disciplined."
